The sarod is a fretless instrument with a deep, resonant, introspective sound. The evening will include a sarod viola jugalbandi by these senior students of the great Maestro Ali Akbar Khan.

Sarod player Ben Kunin learned his instrument and the tradition of North Indian classical music over more than 25 years of study under the legendary Maestro Ali Akbar Khan at the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, CA. He also learned tabla from Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri for many years. In 2006 he began training with Pandit Chitresh Das and the Chandam School of Kathak Dance. He performs frequently as a soloist and as well as accompanist.
Rachel Unterseher, a violinist and violist, began her studies in Hindustani classical music with the legendary Maestro Ali Akbar Khan at the Ali Akbar College of Music in 1990. She had the good fortune to have the opportunity to study instrumental and vocal music with him for 20 years. In addition, she has received tutelage from Hindustani violinists Satyadev Pawar and Sisirkhana Dhar Chaudhuri, and training in tabla from Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, while at the Ali Akbar College of Music. In Western classical music, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and Violin Performance from Mills College in 1998, where she received training with violinist David Abel.
