RETREAT  Need some time away? Immerse yourself in the Yogic lifestyle. Whether you want to jump-start your yoga practice or go deeper in an established practice, time at our affiliated ashram will give you the boost you need. Recharge in a peaceful environment for a day, a weekend or longer. Basque in the pristine energy.

ACCOMMODATIONS  The Ashram has been renovated over the past 15 years to better accommodate demand for Yoga, meditation and immersion in Nature. The accommodations–Om Cabins, Siva Cabins and deluxe Shanti Cabins–are beautiful and comfortable, keeping to the spirit of “simple living and high thinking.” Tenting is also an option. The programs are more and more diversified keeping to the powerful teachings of classical yoga at the same time bringing in modern ideas and current well-known teachers. The Ashram has become a flourishing spiritual institution whose presence is known locally, nationaly, and internationally.

45-YEAR HISTORY  The founder, Swami Vishnudevananda, arrived in San Francisco in 1957, sent from India by his guru, Swami Sivananda. He proceeded to set up an international organization to spread the classical Yoga teachings. In 1971, Swami Vishnudevananda returned to California and founded his third ashram, the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm, on 40 acres of land located in the Gold Country of the beautiful Sierra Nevada foothills in Northern California. The “Yoga Farm,” as Swami Vishnudevananda nicknamed the ashram, remained his favorite place for personal retreat and is where he wrote Meditation and Mantras.

TEACHING TEACHERS  In 1974, the Yoga Farm hosted the first Sivananda Teachers' Training Course on the West Coast. Yoga practitioners are increasingly aware of deeper and subtler aspects of classical yogic teachings, and seek a retreat where they can deepen their practice, renew their inspiration and further educate themselves. The Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm responds by maintaining a pure atmosphere where people rediscover their Divine Self. It is a spiritual, non-sectarian, non-profit organization run entirely by dedicated Yoga teachers who selflessly teach this ancient system.

Sivananda Yoga is qualified in a Time magazine article on Yoga as “moderately difficult” and goes on: “One of the world's largest schools of Yoga, Sivananda calls for the rigorous application of Yoga postures, breathing exercises, relaxation, vegetarian diet and study of scriptures. May require lifestyle changes.” (p.63, Time, April 23, 2001)

Testimonials

“This is my first time at the Yoga Farm and first time ever doing yoga. What I experienced and learned in the last two days were amazing. Things I can and will put into my daily life. I will be back and encourage my children and grandchildren to come also. Living so close, only 1 hour away is a blessing to know this is here.” —Rosemary, Arboga (February 2013)

“I want to thank you for the opportunity to experience this weekend. I would come back to rejuvenate myself and to share this experience with my friends and family. I would not have had the courage to try yoga but I was surprised how non-judging the yoga class was and was encouraged to do what you can do. I could not do so much of the poses but for what I could do it was beneficial. Thank you.” —Barbara (February 2013)

“We (Yoga Bharati) appreciate the hard work that Ashram staff put in to make us comfortable. Below are some emails from some of our students regarding their experience in the Ashram:
- Coming to the retreat was a life-changing experience for me and my family. Can't thank the YIC faculty enough for introducing us to that place as I never knew the existence of such a place so close to Bay Area and yet so full of bliss and tranquillity.
- Last weekend was indeed a wonderful experience for all of us...the atmosphere was so serene, calm and peaceful that we totally felt at home there, and Savita's organization and coordination added extra comfort levels to our stay. My whole family enjoyed the lectures and the other sessions at the ashram and felt very comfortable making friends with fellow students and faculty.
